Kenny C. Guinn Middle School, 9/5/2015. Have driven by it often, pay more attention now that I'm in the business of "net rehabilitation." There are a total of ten basketball hoops, but you can't count one of them because there is only half a rim on the backboard. One has one of those chain nets - I had my son make a shot on it, horrible sound when the ball goes through - the others had those canvas nets with the hooks. Those would have Dr. Naismith rolling over in his grave and puking in his peach baskets (presuming he could). Those will have to wait for a later date, as I had enough of a challenge on the two that I did change.
The first rim had a couple hooks left from a canvas net and a cable tie that had probably been used for securing part of the previous nylon net. Gallant effort, but as you can see by the picture, major changes were in need.
As if another challenge was needed, two of the curled metal loops that the net hooks on to were missing, leaving only 10. Since the nets have twelve strands, I have to double up on two of the loops. I don't like doubling up, makes the net asymmetrical and not as strong due to it being weaker on the one side.
The second rim was what we call in the net rehab industry, "naked." It's not uncommon, but if you shoot on a rim that way you end up chasing the basketball after you make a shot - providing that you can tell if it went through the rim. Great, two more of the metal loops are missing. Time to double up again. These two rims are really just getting a "battlefield fix." They need to be airlifted to a hoops hospital to get proper medical attention. Hey, we're out in the field here, supplies are limited and "Hawkeye" Pierce is unavailable for surgery.
